As a native Houstonian, I proudly promote all things HTX but now I am finally breaking down all the reasons I love this town! Houston has been quietly (or not so quietly, if you ask this native) growing into a thriving metropolis at a rate faster than most other cities in the country. While the Lone Star State of Texas may paint a picture of oil derricks, cowboys, open roads, desert landscapes and longhorn cattle, Houston is an oasis far removed from the rest of the state’s imagery.
Fresh off a World Series victory (and maybe a Rockets Championship - fingers crossed!) and with a booming job market, Houston is looking more and more appealing by the day. It's no wonder so many people are looking at moving to Houston. Not convinced? Here are five reasons to relocate yourself to Houston!
The dream is to have a career that is fulfilling, challenging, and that pays well. But great jobs just don’t fall into a person’s lap. To secure something that fits all of the criteria can be a long and energy-sapping journey. Until most of us reach this point, there will be jobs that are on the other end of the spectrum. Rather than being exciting and demanding, they’ll be boring and soul-destroying.
Getting out of the environment is the first port of call, but it isn’t simple. Applying and securing a new position takes time and effort, both of which plenty of people don’t have. The compromise is to make work life a little more bearable from Monday to Friday. It’s certainly better than waking up and mumbling “I hate my job!” At least, this way, you’ll be able to strike a balance before leaving and starting anew.
The major things always seem as if they will have the biggest impact yet the small details can go a long way. Here are six little tricks to keep in mind around the office.
I love my town but there is definitely some long drive times when meetings bring you across town or you have an hour or more commute. When you’re dedicated to your career, there’s a chance that you could be on the road travelling to different meetings, or even to pitch to potential clients. That means a lot of your time is going to be spent in your car, so we’ve compiled a list of things that all career "driven" people should keep in their car so that the long journeys are that little bit more bearable and can keep you at the top of your game!
The office life isn’t for everyone. The early morning rush, the hot, stuffy environment, and the inevitable office politics all make working in a big business irritating and annoying. If you want an alternative, you can consider working from home. Many people want to run their own career and escape the rat race. You might be wondering about the type of careers that you can pursue without heading to the office each morning. Well, there are a four great possibilities to consider here.
Are you tired of working in groups? Do you feel like you’re not a very collaborative type? Don’t worry–you’re not alone. Thousands of people switch their careers every year because they realize they’re not a good fit for traditional corporate life. Perhaps they want to take a more important role in their industries or maybe they prefer to work in solitude. Whatever the reason is, there’s nothing wrong with working alone and it can actually be beneficial for people to work by themselves.
If you think you’re better off as a solo worker, then here are a couple of career choices that allow you to work on your own. Keep in mind that not every job is completely isolated–you’ll eventually have to report back to someone or speak to clients, but in terms of the actual work itself, you’re on your own and in charge of your own workflow.
Do you feel like you’re stuck in the rat race? Spending the best years of your life working for a big corporation, earning them lots of money and without making a real difference in the world? If so, how about making a change? There’s no denying that switching careers is a bold and scary move, however our work takes up so much of our time and energy. If you’re not happy in the workplace and can’t find anything rewarding or interesting about your current job, you’re never going to be fully happy in life. Here are a few of the most rewarding careers you could consider if you are ready to make a switch.
