A Little Bit More About Polished Professionals

Polished Professionals is written by me - M.E.L. - a native Houstonian, wife, lawyer, small business entrepreneur and a woman dedicated to working for pretty shoes. I am by no means a supermodel but I like to play one in my closet!
As for my background, I was raised in south Houston, Texas. I grew up in a dance studio and loved every minute of it. My mom is one of my greatest inspirations. Her entrepreneurial spirit is contagious. With $200 she founded her studio 44 years ago and it is still going strong! Today I help run that studio and also work as a lawyer and as co-founder and vice president of Manners Pro, an etiquette consulting business.. I am a graduate of the University of St. Thomas in Houston, Texas. After college, I attended the University of Texas School of Law. I received Etiquette Consulting Certification from the Etiquette Institute of St. Louis. Most recently, I received my MBA from University of Texas McCombs School of Business. The goal of this site to give confidence to all working women to be a polished professional. I want you to be ready to look the part whether it's business casual, business, or formal attire. There are rules about how you should look and act at work (and in general) as a professional. Some of these rules are written and some unwritten and it's hard to figure it out on your own. I have worked in businesses that are formal business attire (suits every day), business casual (collared shirts, no jeans) and very casual (I mean yoga pant casual). I have worked in hierarchical organizations where title and seniority were of utmost importance and more collaborative environments where titles and office sizes were all the same. It's a lot to navigate and unfortunately classes like personal style, modern manners, work politics savvy or professional poise were not available at my college course load. How about yours? I had to figure it out these written and unwritten rules on my own and I definitely have made (and seen) some mistakes. So, I am here to share a little of what I have learned, to learn some more as I go, and hopefully give some good thoughts on how to navigate this workaday work with polished, professional style, effortless beauty, and poise. One important mantra that will influence everything I wear is that, as a professional, you are never really "off the clock." You can run into your CEO at a restaurant on Tuesday night or a client at the gym on Saturday morning. So, the clothes I wear off the clock need to be things I feel comfortable in front of my clients, my bosses, and my colleagues (I live in the smallest big town in the world - HTX). Food for thought! I am always open for questions so please ask away! Return to blog. |
