You know that I love to travel and I have been blessed to travel in my career. But, the majority of people will stay in their native country for the majority of their lives. The only time that they will generally head overseas is for the sake of a vacation, where they will often spend their time relaxing on beaches or lying on sunloungers in resorts. But there’s so much more out there in the world than potential vacation hotspots! The world is your oyster, and it’s surprising that more people don’t take the opportunity to travel with their career. So, if you intend to broaden your horizons, why not give in to wanderlust? Here are just a few of the benefits that come hand in hand with taking your career abroad, whether temporarily or permanently. Understand Other Cultures Understanding other cultures is an essential part of life. Different cultures have different dominant modes of seeing the world around us. There are different priorities, and certain traits, interests, and priorities gain increased significance from one place to another. Engaging with this can open our eyes to new perspectives and also help us to gain a sense of humility. Once we have grasped these new and alternative perspectives, we can use them not only in our personal development but in the development of our career. Firstly, we can use the skills we’ve gained in operating between cultures to approach problems from alternative angles. We may also decide to put our focus into different areas of our work than we originally did. How? Well, we could focus more on interpersonal relations (between ourselves and customers, or ourselves and employees, for example) over profit. Having a more varied understanding of the workplace will only serve to improve the way that we go about things. If you decide to stick to your own way of doing things, then that is fine too! But you will now be more aware of how customers, clients, and partners may see things differently to you and be able to forge bridges between the two modes of thought more simply. One of the only potential problems? Misunderstandings between cultures may cause initial difficulty with getting work in a new country to start with. But don’t worry. You can employ the help of an international academic CV service to get your foot in the door. Expand Your Contacts Heading abroad can put you in touch with a whole host of new business contacts. You never know where your next biggest market may be and the right collaboration could see your goods or services flying off the shelves in an overseas market. Something that may struggle in your native country may be in high demand elsewhere. Though you may not wish to permanently move to this place, travelling in its vicinity could put you in touch with individuals who could do a great job of handling your transactions, distribution and commercial properties in said location. So, if you’ve never considered taking your work to another country as of yet, it may be time to start testing the waters. Rather than jumping straight into the deep end, do your research and take small but sure steps to experiencing new places and cultures.
