It’s just a fact that the majority of us have to work for a living. If you’re going to spend such a big chunk of your time working somewhere, then the least that you can hope for is that it’s worth your time. All too often, people end up working in jobs that aren’t satisfying on any level. And we think that’s wrong. You should be aiming for the best jobs! But, of course, those jobs are difficult to obtain; there’s a lot of competition, after all. But it clearly isn’t impossible to get those jobs. People do have them, after all! So how do they go about it? In this blog, we’ll take a look at some actions that employees in the top positions take. They Apply For Them You won’t get the job if you don’t apply for it! This is true even if you’re given a heads up for the position (told by an insider, rather than seeing it on a job board). They might tell you about it, but you have to go through the steps. Many people avoid applying for the top positions because they think they’re too difficult to obtain. But if you never try, then you’ll never know. They Network As we just alluded to, sometimes it’s who you know as well as what you know. If you’re an expert networker, then it’ll be much more likely that you’re offered a job (or invited to apply) somewhere down the line throughout your career. The more people there are in your network, the more likely it is that you’ll be successful. So get involved. There are plenty of different ways to network. Mostly it’s just a mindset. If you’re comfortable talking to people, then you’ll be on the right track. They Set Goals and Work Hard One of the keys to landing a great job is setting professional development goals and working hard to achieve them. This involves identifying what skills and experience are necessary for your desired position and developing a plan to gain those skills and build that experience. It also requires taking action on your work goals by actively seeking out opportunities for growth and applying yourself fully. If you do this consistently and persistently, you are far more likely to land a job that is the right fit for your skills and aspirations. You need to aim high and demonstrate your determination, commitment, and work ethic to secure a position that will allow you to develop professionally and thrive in your career. They Make Sure Their Application Is Watertight You’re not going to get very far if your application is riddled with mistakes. When you apply for a top job, you’ll need to do everything you can to ensure that your application impresses the people that read it. They’ll have enough applications to go through, after all -- if yours isn’t up to scratch, then it’ll end up in the bin pretty quickly. In many cases, making sure you send something excellent will just be a matter of dedicating time and energy. But in other cases, you should pursue outside help. If you’re applying to a company that is as competitive as McKinsey, for example, then you should work with a company that offers a McKinsey application review. It might just give you the edge you need to succeed. They Don’t Give Up Finally: the people who end up in the best jobs don’t give up. It’s highly unlikely that you’re going to get your dream job at the first time of asking. Not many people end up in the best position straight away. It takes time and dedication. So make sure that you have a positive mindset if you experience rejection. It’s a learning curve that’ll help you in the future. We hope these tips help inspire you to go after your dream job!
