Is a lack of water the problem?
We are constantly told that we need to drink more water, so this may seem like the same, old information to many. However, do you know about the influence water has on productivity and alertness in the workplace? Even if you are only slightly dehydrated, your energy can drain and you can feel extremely tired. It is advisable that women drink 2.2 litres a day, which is about nine cups, and men drink about three liters, which is 13 cups. We have linked some of our favorite bottles for office below. Moreover, research indicates that if the average worker has not been properly hydrated, they only operate at 65 per cent of their true potential. This can result in you feeling unmotivated and lethargic. Drinking the recommended amount of water can also boost cognitive performance levels by as much as 30 percent. Finally, the human brain consists of around 85 percent water, and, therefore, a loss of concentration and focus can occur if there is a shortage, even one as low as two percent.
Reducing Stress at Work
Did you know that 40 percent of adults say they lie awake at night worrying about the stresses they experienced that day? A lot of people underestimate the negative impact stress can have on the body. A small amount of stress can be a good thing, keeping us alert and ensuring we avoid danger. However, if stress-related tension builds and you are overworked, stress can have negative consequences, including chest pain, sleeping problems, elevated blood pressure, an upset stomach, and headaches. This is why you need to keep stress levels to a minimum while at work, which can be one of the most stress-inducing environments. So, how can you minimize stress at work?
One way to manage stress is through better planning. Try to eliminate interruptions. From instant messages and emails to urgent deadlines and phone calls, people feel more distracted than ever. Don’t react to all interruptions straight away - plan a time to deal with each item on your to do list so they don't come as an interruption. We have some of our favorite planners linked below. You should also concentrate on your breathing at work. Deep breathing for a few minutes after a stressful time can restore balance. So get a quick time out of your office to breathe some fresh air and take a 10 minute walk to calm your focus and tackle the rest of your day's agenda. Finally, prioritize things effectively to ensure you aren’t trying to juggle everything, and identify any stress that is self-imposed.
When we feel things are out of our control, this is when we get stressed, which in turn wears down our concentration, confidence, and well being. Instead, you should try and control the aspects you can. This is not to day that you should ignore serious work stresses that tare outside of your control.
