3 Things You're Getting Wrong In Your Oral Care Routine

Your oral health can impact your general well-being in many ways, including boosting your confidence. However, many people overlook this, with research revealing that 1 in 4 adults has untreated dental caries. Some are unaware of these caries due to the absence of pain and other symptoms. It also shows the extent to which your oral care may be compromised while you have no idea about it. A great way to be on top of your dental health is to know some of the things you’re getting wrong in that area so you can correct them. Below are three such errors.
1.  Rushing through brushing
Oral care experts say the ideal duration for brushing your teeth is a full two minutes while observing proper cleaning techniques. However, many people rush through this task and end up not cleaning their teeth properly. The human oral cavity has several surfaces that need proper attention during brushing. Apart from the chewing surfaces, there is a need to focus on the front, back, and sides of each tooth as the brush glides over them. Although sometimes you may clean your teeth vigorously, you may have still missed several spots.
Try setting a timer before you start to brush your teeth. Make it even more fun by listening to a two-minute song so you know when to stop brushing when the music ends. Regarding the technique, use gentle, circular motions to dislodge any particles and plaque between and on your teeth. It is crucial to use gentle force to avoid causing damage to your gums and enamel. Remember, excessive force does not always mean effective cleaning.

2.  Ignoring regular dental checkups
Many people skip dental appointments because there is nothing wrong with their teeth. However, waiting till you have excruciating tooth pain may not be ideal, especially at a time when medical technology is far advanced and dental problems can be resolved in no time. Regular dental checkups offer a great opportunity for your dentist to detect issues before they escalate. For example, a dental cavity will often give no symptoms until it gets deeper into the roots. It is the same with early-stage gum disease or oral cancer, when you may experience heightened sensitivity to hot and cold foods, and so on. Your dentist will go further to provide professional cleaning and personalized dental advice for your unique situation. If you’re unsure where to find one, you can search online using terms like a dentist near me to locate a dental clinic that offers your preferred service.

3.  Neglecting your tongue and gums
Your tongue and gums are critical to a healthy oral cavity. That is why cleaning them when brushing your teeth is essential. Bacteria accumulates on the tongue’s surface, which often leads to bad breath. Use a tongue scraper to clean your tongue regularly to keep your mouth cleaner. Brushing properly can also help you reach food pieces that get trapped in the inner corners of your cheeks. Apart from cleaning your tongue, you must also pay close attention to your gums. That is because compromised gums can lead to tooth loss if left unattended.

Remember that consistency is key to your oral care habits. Brush twice a day and floss daily for optimal results.
