Anyone else going blonde - or blonder - for the summer? I love getting a brighter blonde during the warmer months. But, my roots are steadily growing out (my hairdresser says your hair grows faster in the summer!) and summer travel schedules certainly gets in the way of planning regular trips to the salon. Because I cannot pull off the ombre look to save my life and because the frizzy dry blonde apparently is not cute, what is a girl to do to keep her blonde ambitions in check this summer? I have my favorite picks for extending your blonde and keeping your hair looking freshly colored and smooth - even if you don't have a hair appointment on the agenda!
There are some more permanent and some less permanent options for keeping your blonde roots fresh. You can consider me your tester for both as I have used (for many years) the more permanent options below and I have also battle tested the options that can wash out. Note, some of the options I have below are also available for other hair colors like red, black and brown so not everyone is left out!
Permanent(er) Blonde Options- Anyone else remember Sun In????? Or have you done the lemon juice in the hair? I used to do that when I was a kid but gone are those days. I have found a great permanent blonde root solution that will definitely add a month to your color. The more permanent hair color at home is easy to use to do highlights (pick strands to spray) or just touch up your roots (targeted spray at base of hair) or spray all over for lighter hair color throughout (my brunette friend does this and it looks amazing). I have been using this hair color for 2+ years and so far no weird color changes or any problems at all. It is my go to for getting some extra blonde while at home. You do have to do it a few times to see noticeable results - so it lightens a little bit each time you use it. I usually use after a wash and then I blow dry to activate. It will lighten a little and after 3-4 uses you can definitely see results. But it does make it less risky for sure than full on bleach at home plus its just $12! Less Permanent Blonde Options - Now there are so many products on the market to help your roots look freshly colored. They do come in lots shades so I know you can find the right one to match your hair. I tend to like the powders for less permanent options than the color sprays - somehow the sprays seem a little sticky to me. But the less permanent options are very easy to use. You literally just apply where you want the color and it washes out with your next wash. No dye actually happens to the hair. Think of it as makeup for your hair. Less Permanent Washes/Glosses - With the summer months the heat does a number on my strands. It dies them out more than normal and can cause breakage. I like to use "blonde" specific washes and glosses in the summer to protect my hair. Glosses I only use once a week and washes I typically use 3 times a week. I have a lightening wash that I have been using for years. It is not hugely noticeable but it does help keep my color looking fresh. The glosses really help brighten color and will transfer a little color to roots if you use a colored gloss. You can also use a clear gloss for any color hair and it really helps moisturize anyone's hair. I have linked my go to color options below.
