For many of us, a dream job is more like a fantasy. Being excited about going into work and feeling as if you are making a difference, not just for the people you work for but for yourself, may be difficult to come by. But it is not impossible. Your dream job can be achieved if you are willing to focus and put a lot of effort into achieving it. No matter how old you are, you can always change course and do something that inspires you. It all starts with a single step into unknown territory. Do Your Research
It doesn’t matter what the job is, you need to do your homework and find out just what exactly you need to land your dream job. First, you need to look at where you are. What skills do you currently have that will help you get to where you want to be? Is there any scope to move internally at the company you are in to gather more specialized knowledge? What qualifications do you need? Do you need a degree, such as a DNP degree for nursing? What experience would be beneficial? If you find you need to go back to university, could you volunteer at the same time to gather the right kind of experience? Where could you do this? Having a certain level of experience will propel you ahead of the competition. It may be ab idea to speak to professionals in the field you want to be and discover their stories on how they got to be where they are. By researching the fundamentals of what you need, you will discover exactly how much it is going to cost you in terms of money and time to achieve the desired result. Then you can start formulating a plan of attack. Start Networking Networking may be a difficult task at first, but if you are determined, you have to get out there and network. Networking may well be the key to getting your foot in the door of the company you want to work for. By introducing yourself and chatting to the right people, you can show employers your talents. Maybe you have always wanted to work for a specific company. Well, it definitely helps if someone who works there already is singing your praises. If you are truly passionate about this new career, it will come across, and the more you delve into the subject matter with the right people, the more natural the flow of conversation will be. Your nerves will dissipate, and all they will see is a driven and passionate individual. Take any business card offered to you, and say yes to any subsequent meetup, obviously! Also, remember to create a professional LinkedIn page as well as other useful social media pages. This will help you stay in touch with the professionals you met at the networking event. Study Hard Most dream jobs will involve your going into some level of further education. If you feel as if you have not achieved what you should have before, education-wise, this is your chance to settle the score. You are older, wiser, and more focussed now and can devote your time to achieving the grades you need. If you have questions, make doubly sure you ask them. Request one on one time with the tutor to overview your work, if need be. You are paying for an education, and these are the people to help you, so remember that work for you. If you need a top grade, it is achievable as long as you are prepared to put in the work and focus. Look the Part Remember that first impressions definitely do count, and if you want your dream job, maybe you need to start dressing and acting the part already. Watch how the people who already have the job you want, behave, how do they look, what do they wear? If you can start behaving in a way that suggests you already have the job, it may help when it comes to that all-important interview. Remember that being fit and healthy will also help. If you look well and like you care about your body, it will definitely show a little about your character. Exercise is also a great way to build up your self-confidence. By exercising, you will not only look better, but you will also have more energy and vigor and appear more motivated. If you want to work for a thriving business, then looking the part, and coming across as a good fit is to your advantage.
