Four Interesting Jobs In The Medical Industry

Medicine is a wonderful industry to be a part of. You are helping people, contributing to assisting people in the most difficult times of their lives and also bringing your expertise to the field. As a younger person looking to branch out into medicine, it may be difficult to pinpoint a career that is best suited to you, or if you wish to climb the ladder, it may not be clear which is the best area to start with. The choice is yours, ultimately, however you may want to make a list of your strengths and weaknesses and any preferences you have within medicine. 

For example, you may love working with children, so you may want to make your focus within pediatrics. If you enjoy the science behind how the heart works, you may want to look into working within cardiology. The list of jobs are endless; from admin jobs to more hands on jobs and nursing, there is always something you can look at. 

Phlebotomist - a phlebotomist is someone who takes blood and may be involved with transfusions, research and blood donations. It is important to be polite and friendly with your patients so if you enjoy speaking to people and enjoy more general medicine then this could be a great job for you. You will need to undergo phlebotomy training and then you can start applying for jobs, either within a doctor’s surgery or hospital, but it paves the way for you to gain more skills as you go. Anesthesiologist - this is an area that can be used within medicine and other types of surgery, and is a very important role in surgery. Being the primary medical person who administers anesthetic to people going in for surgery. Most often this is general anesthetic but there are other areas such as working with people during sedation but this role involves being good at talking to people and understanding patient’s fears and worries as well as taking care of the patient during their surgery. 

​Midwife - this role can be challenging, and although it can be incredibly rewarding, a midwife may also encounter complications with mother and baby at birth and this involves being able to work under pressure as well as understanding the female anatomy and all aspects of birth. A midwife will work closely with their patient during the labor of the baby and will be the prime member of the team.  Pharmacist - pharmacy is still within the branch of medicine and it can be a great job for people who enjoy science. Learning about how drugs work, what drugs need to be administered and what drugs can be taken together is a very important job, when you are dealing with people in the chemist itself. Lots of pharmacists will go on to study further and be an independent prescriber but the job can be stressful and busy at times if you are working in a hospital environment.
